Time perspective, depression, and substance misuse among the homeless

Using the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI; P. G. Zimbardo & J. N. Boyd, 1999), the authors found that homeless people, in comparison with a control group, had a significantly more negative outlook concerning their past and present as evinced by high Past-Negative and Present-Fatalistic scores and low Past-Positive scores on the ZTPI. However, the homeless individuals were almost indistinguishable from control participants on measures of Present-Hedonism and Future thinking. The homeless individuals had significantly higher levels of depression, with 31 out of 50 (62%) reaching criteria for probable depression. However, this finding was unrelated to their atypical time perspective. There was no significant relation between substance misuse and time perspective. Despite their current difficulties, including depression and drug abuse, the homeless individuals maintained a propensity toward future thinking characterized by striving to achieve their goals.

Differential equations having orthogonal polynomial solutions

AbstractNecessary and sufficient conditions for an orthogonal polynomial system (OPS) to satisfy a differential equation with polynomial coefficients of the form (∗) LN[y] = ∑i=1Nli(x)y(i)(x) = λny(x) were found by H.L. Krall. Here, we find new necessary conditions for the equation (∗) to have an OPS of solutions as well as some other interesting applications. In particular, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a distribution w(x) to be an orthogonalizing weight for such an OPS and investigate the structure of w(x). We also show that if the equation (∗) has an OPS of solutions, which is orthogonal relative to a distribution w(x), then the differential operator LN[·] in (∗) must be symmetrizable under certain conditions on w(x)

Orthogonal polynomials in two variables and second-order partial differential equations

AbstractWe study the second-order partial differential equations L[u] = Auxx +22Buxy + Cuyy + Dux + Euy = λnu, which have orthogonal polynomials in two variables as solutions. By using formal functional calculus on moment functionals, we first give new simpler proofs and improvements of the results by Krall and Sheffer and Littlejohn. We then give a two-variable version of Al-Salam and Chihara's characterization of classical orthogonal polynomials in one variable. We also study in detail the case when L[·] belongs to the basic class, that is, Ay = Cx = 0. In particular, we characterize all such differential equations which have a product of two classical orthogonal polynomials in one variable as solutions

Evaluation of academic library web sites in Malaysia

This study evaluates the content and design of academic library Web sites in Malaysia and uses a mixed-method approach that combines both quantitative and qualitative analyses of academic library Web sites evaluation. A total of twelve library Web sites of public and private institutions of higher learning were selected for evaluation. Thefindings reveal that the academic libraries in Malaysia generally have set up well-designed and useful Web sites. A few academic library Web sites, however, have very simple and basic features. Overall, they fall short of expectations as virtual expressions of the quality levels of academic libraries

    Get PDF

The demand to secure an alternative resource has been increased recently rather than fossil or nuclear\ud powers. One of the affordable ocean energy is the tidal energy since it is considered as a reliable and predictable power\ud source. The turbine is one of the essential components which can convert the tidal current into the rotational force. The\ud design optimization of turbine can contribute significantly to the performance of system. There are several key aspects\ud in the design of turbine. Also the estimation of the device performance is to be carried out by the proven technologies.\ud This paper introduces the design procedure of the tidal current turbine considering number of blades, shape, sectional\ud profile, diameter, etc. Also the performance evaluations of the system with single and multi-arrangements are discussed
